Saturday 28 June - Melbourne Ground
Crowd: 3000-4000
Melbourne 1
Collingwood 1 (half time 1-1)
Match drawn
Goalkicker: T. Reade 1
With a stiff wind blowing the junior club played with a two man advantage, 20 to 18, but were immediately on the defensive as Melbourne pressed for a quick opening goal. Collingwood held them back, but the ball was never far from their goal. Despite Melbourne's domination, it took an hour for Reade to open the scoring.
After the change of ends Collingwood remained on the back foot, desperately guarding their goal. With the usual problem of spectators spilling onto the ground making play hard, the visitors got lucky in the last 10 minutes. The ball emerged from the crowd, along the wing, and for a goal from their first attack of the day. This caused spectators to rush the field again, all but ending the game.
Best were C. Carr, Forrester and Moore. Ryan had to leave the game after an early knee injury.
