Invited to Melbourne by Norm Smith in 1967 during his second year in the Melbourne Grammar first 18, Guest was vice-captain of the side in 1967 and played Under 19's against school rules.

The next year he officially joined the club but snapped his Achilles' tendon and ankle ligaments, causing him to miss 1969.

A severe carpal tunnel injury caused him to miss 1970 as well, and after a year overseas Guest decided to concentrate on business instead. He joined Old Melburnians and played more than 150 games before retiring aged 32.

He later moved into coaching at OMFC, where he was in charge of Premier B thirds premierships in 2012 and 2013.

His son James Guest played Reserves in 1996.
