Played six games with St Kilda across 1991 and 1992, before being drafted by Melbourne. Afterovercoming pre-season knee soreness,Hilton spent all of 1993 in the seconds, playing more than 50 Reserves games across both clubs during his career.

Hilton broke into Melbourne's senior side for 1994 after an off-season fitness campaign where he lost eight kilograms. Despite showing glimpses of brilliance he could never cement a permanent place in the Melbourne lineup and left at the end of 1996, only playing five times in his last year.

Hilton later claimed that he had sought a release from the last year of his contract to join Footscray during the trade period, and that a swap had been arranged for Bulldog Darryl Griffin before Footscray's board overruled their football department and vetoed the trade. He was then delisted by the Demons.

Joined WAFL side Peel Thunder in 1997 where he linked up with former teammate Phil Gilbert. Hilton played for Rye in 2001 but was kept to a handful of games by back injuries.
