"Dookie" McKenzie - he had inherited his nickname from Alex McKenzie who had played with Melbourne in the 1880's - debuted for Brunswick in 1898 before transferring to Essendon in 1901. He spent two seasons in the VFL before moving to the Western Australian Goldfields competition and played for the White Feather club in 1903.
Returning to Essendon he was made captain and won a best-and-fairest award. In 1907 he took up an invitation to coach Essendon Association in the VFA without a permit from his original club. He then returned to Brunswick where he captain-coached them to a premiership in 1909 despite missing the Grand Final after being concussed the week before. His assailant received a two year ban.
As captain in 1911 he was offered a £150 bribe to throw the VFA Grand Final but refused the offer and reported it to the association instead.
Melbourne initially appointed him as playing coach for the 1914 season but the league refused to clear him due to his unauthorised move to the VFA eight years earlier. In the meantime he applied for a clearance to Port Melbourne where he intended to coach, but was rejected by his club and he played out the rest of 1914 at Brunswick before joining Melbourne.

McKenzie eventually won his permit to join Melbourne for 1915 and that year he captain-coached the Fuschias to their first finals series in fifteen years.
His VFL career was derailed by the war, but McKenzie returned to coaching ranks in 1919 with VFA also-rans Hawthorn. He was replaced as Mayblooms coach in 1922, then going to Brunswick and Yarraville in 1925.
McKenzie's son Jack Junior played five games for Essendon in 1929

May have been the McKenzie who moved to Sydney, played for Newton and represented NSW against Victoria in 1921 - this may also have been Bill McKenzie.
