Melbourne win by 3 points
Fitzroy had their chances in the last quarter, coming from 32 points down at the last change but missing several chances from inside 50 metres to take the lead. The Lions had two opportunities to win the game, missing shots from inside 50 in the dying minutes. They had already blown an advantage in the first quarter, going 14-0 up before allowing the Demons to be 10 ahead at the first break. Melbourne kicked the next seven goals.
In a spiteful game, players from both sides were fortunate not to be reported, with the only man in the book Fitzroy's Paul Roos for abusive language towards an umpire after the game.
Best were Johnson, Stynes and G. Lovett. Healy suffered concussion and Tingay a twisted knee.
After the game John Northey lamented his inexperienced team trying to save the game instead of winning it.
