Played a solitary game in the first season of the VFL as the then youngest man to appear for the club. He also played for his school side during the year.
He then disappeared from senior ranks until 1903, in which time he served as a rifleman during the Boer War. He returned to the league when he was cleared to Essendon in May 1903, playing twice for them.
Godby also played cricket for the East Melbourne club.
