Drafted after playing senior football towards the end of his last season with South Adelaide, Sampson showed some promise in his two seasons at Melbourne before being traded to Adelaide for Nick Pesch.

Sampson won a Premiership in his first season at the Crows after breaking into the side late in the year, but missed their 1998 flag and moved to Richmond. He played two seasons for the Tigers before joining South Adelaide in 2001. Played there until 2008 when he was appointed an assistant coach. Midway through that year he appointed to the senior job, but was sacked at the end of 2009 and joined Myponga/Sellicks, remaining there until 2015.
