Wednesday August 13 - MCG
Crowd: 7000
Carlton 3
Melbourne 0 (half time 2-0)
Carlton dominated the third Australian Rules match played under lights - and the first between senior clubs - but the white ball which was being used burst and was replaced with a brown ball which was difficult to see in the conditions. The match had already started an hour late due to problems with the lighting - including a new sixth light in addition to the five used in the previous match.
Little of the play could be seen from the stands, and the match became almost farcical when the dark ball was introduced. It was only when play crossed the direct beam of the lights that fans could see what was going on. They might have missed Carlton getting the first goal after 15 minutes and a second 10 minutes later.
Carlton got their third goal shortly after the resumption of play, but players had trouble seeing under the lights and the game was judged a failure.
The match was not considered to be part of the regular VFA season, and is treated as an exhibition match.
