South won the toss and chose to kick with a wind equal to four or five extra players. They used the advantage to put Melbourne's goal under siege early in the game before Melbourne pushed them back, even attacking the South goal at times.
After 90 minutes of play, South finally broke through for the first goal of the game. On changing ends Melbourne had the wind advantage but failed to score. With South unable to achieve a second goal the match ended in a draw.
