Geelong win by one goal

After a long stretch from the start of the season where they went unbeaten and a valid contender for the VFA premiership, Melbourne all but handed Essendon that year's flag with their second loss in two weeks.

In the last match of the season on the MCG they only had themselves to blame - a blistering first quarter when they racked up five goals was followed by three consecutive quarters where they failed to register any type of score goal or behind.

After an run of luck with the umpiring in the first quarter, including Howes' second coming scored after he had initially kicked into the man on the mark but received another shot when the umpire judged his opponent had crept over the line, their cause wasn't aided in the second half by the loss of champion David Christy to a leg injury when he'd been the best player on the ground to that point.

For the match of the day the game attracted a disappointing crowd, and Melbourne went in without a number of their best players. Captain Eddie Fox missed a game for the first time in seven years, and ruckman McKenzie was also out.

Early in the game it seemed that the missing players weren't going to have any impact as Melbourne cut their visitors to shreds. With the wind Geelong equalised at a goal each before the Reds ran away from them. Howes got three goals for the quarter, but that was all the scoring Melbourne did.

Multiple attacks early in the second quarter came to nothing and Geelong scored the only two goals of the term to cut the margin to one going into the second half.

The game was even in the early stages of the third quarter, with Melbourne not showing anywhere near the blistering form that they exhibited the last time they'd kicked to that end of the ground. Geelong got two goals and continued to impress, but Melbourne's defense held firm and took them to the last quarter on level terms.

The last quarter was a battle, and both teams had their chances but it was Geelong who broke the deadlock and held on to win. As the game slipped away from them several Melbourne players engaged in rough play against Geelong champion Peter Burns.

After the game Melbourne administrator A. Hunt accused the umpire of bias and was reported to the VFA.

Best were Christy, Howes and Massey.
