1861 May Match vs Geelong

Friday May 24 - MCG
Crowd: About 600

Melbourne 2
Geelong 0

Melbourne win

Goalkickers: Nichols 1, Lucas 1

The King's Birthday Friday match nearly didn't go ahead after heavy showers at midday before the match. Players returned to the pavilion until the rain stopped falling. Both teams had 25 players.

Melbourne started the game nine players short, but kicked with the breeze which helped equalise the game. Rain fell again, leaving the centre of the ground as slippery as ice. In a see-sawing match where both sides had opportunities to score goals neither team succeeded before lunch. Soon after the Reds finished the match quickly with two goals.

Harrison - who had captained Melbourne in the first game - and Greig joined the Geelong side for a scratch match but Melbourne won again, with Baker getting both goals for his side.
