The brother of Todd had a meteoric rise through SANFL ranks, going from the Sturt Under 19s to seniors in half a season.

After joining Melbourne, he debuted with three games in 1988, before missing out on playing any senior games in 1989. He returned for nine more games in 1990. The next year was his most successful, despite missing a month at the start of the year with a knee injury suffered in a Reserves game. After breaking back into the senior side in Round 11, he missed the finals after being dropped at the end of the home and away season. Viney was delisted in the 1992 pre-season.

Viney returned to Sturt and captained the club in 1993 and 1994 before later moving to North Adelaide where he was captain in 1997 and 1998.

His younger brother Ryan trained with the Demons after the 2000 season but was not drafted.
