Saturday 23 September - Williamstown Cricket Ground
Williamstown 0.0, 1.0, 1.2, 2.5
Melbourne 3.2, 4.5, 4.7, 4.7
Melbourne won by 2 goals
Goalkickers: Moyey 3, Roche 1
Entering the game with 18 players on the injured list, the Reds had a tough time at Williamstown, and even though they won the margin was much less than it might otherwise have been given the gulf in class between the sides. At times they had to deal with spectators throwing clay at the ball when they set up for a place kick.
The home side were disorganised at first, but in the second half they dominated.
It was reported that as tempers frayed, the Williamstown timekeeper hit his Melbourne equivalent over the back with the bell.
Best was Moysey, Healing and O'Dea. Crosby suffered an injured knee.
