In front of a huge crowd the Demons further enhanced their position at the top of the ladder with a comfortable win over the old enemy. Both teams went into the crucial match without any serious injury dramasbut Collingwood were missing the suspended Murray Weideman. Ian Thorogood had been in doubt for the Demons during the week due to a bruised thigh but was able to play.

Collingwood started the match with purpose, but after the first 10 minutes they were totally outclassed. The match might have been over at quarter time if not for Melbourne's inaccurate kicking - 12 scoring shots to one could have been fatal but they managed just 4.8.

The Magpies rallied early in the second quarter but extra pace allowed the Demons to add another goal to their lead and they ran away to victory with a six goal to nil third term.

Leahy, Barassi and Dixon were Melbourne's best. Barassi (bruised thigh) was replaced by Nilsson in the last quarter, and Lord by Massey - also in the last quarter. Barassi had suffered the injury in the second quarter but played through until the final term before coming off.
