The Demons revival continued with a third straight comfortable but not dominant victory. This time they had to contend with a ground soaked with water, causing players to slip and slide all about the place. Given the conditions and their poor start to the season it was no surprise that the defending premiers failed to impress even in winning.

Melbourne were the first side to attack, but failed to break through and conceded the first goal. On the sodden ground, they had the better of the closing stages of the opening quarter but could only kick behinds. They made amends by quickly booting the first goal of the second term, before aerial superiority helped them open a lead of more than four goals by half time.

Hawthorn got to within 14 points in the third quarter before entering the last change 20 down. They then rallied a second time, drawing to two points behind. They couldn't get their noses in front and the Demons steadied to win.

Best were Don Cordner, Bickford and Denis Cordner were best. Dorgan replaced Dockett (concussion) at half time, Hanna replaced Collins (injured) in the third quarter.
