Returning from the bye Melbourne got the season back on track with yet another closely fought, tight victory. This time it was an upset against one of the league's heavyweights and put them firmly back in the race for a spot in the four.

They hadn't beaten the Magpies at the MCG since 1912, but in one of the matches of the season Melbourne won a tactical victory with their long kicking to the forward line. They outpaced the Pies in the race to the footy and their defence held firm when challenged.

The game opened with Melbourne missing several good chances before George Haines got their first. They could have had another set up by Haines but he passed to Harry Harker who missed a simple shot on goal. It took until the last few minutes for the Pies to register their first major of the game, but they got another one early in the second to take the lead. The two sides were relatively equal through the second quarter, with Collingwood kicking one more goal.

After going in just behind at half time the Reds took a slender lead into the last term aided by poor kicking for goal by the Magpie forwards. In one of the best quarters of football for the year the two sides played a fast game with brilliant kicking and running. Harry Harker made up for his earlier mistake by kicking all four Melbourne goals for the quarter. They could have had a fifth but this time Elliman missed two simple chances.

After Melbourne got the first of the last quarter through Haines, Collingwood looked as if they were going to steal victory over their tiring opponents. It took coach Percy Wilson, himself an ex-Magpie, to call vice-captain George Haines back into the centre where he delivered a dominant last term performance and helped Melbourne hold on. Wilson himself kicked the sealer after the umpire missed a clear infringement by Harker on his opponent which allowed the captain to run onto a loose ball and kick the goal.

Best were Haines, E. Dunbar and Corbett.
