The Demons' disappointing season took another step towards complete failure when they were put to the sword by the equally struggling Cats.

The difference between the two sides was that Geelong had two clearly emerging superstars in Bill Brownless and Gary Ablett playing for them, while the Demons had a collection of ex-superstars who were past their best, kids who were nothing more than promising and players who were simply making up the numbers until somebody better came along.

Not only were Brownless and Ablett one of the lone highlights in another otherwise terrible game, it was the Geelong backline who did as much as anyone to ensure victory by clamping down hard on the Demon forwards and not allowing a single multiple goalkicker.

Geelong coach John Devine called the game “the worst you’d ever seen”, but against a side that brought a skill level of almost zero and were distinctly lacking in system at least he went home with the points.

Best were Jarrott, Newport and Kol. Greg Healy injured his hamstring.
