In a battle between a side up to their neck in the top four and a Melbourne team aspiring to make it back for the first time in years Essendon came out on top by nine goals, but the margin flattered them.
The game was played to a high standard. Essendon jumped out to an early lead with their best football of the season, before Melbourne dug in and started to play good football of their own. They were the better team in the second and third quarter, but fell apart in the last.
The King's Birthday clash was Melbourne's second loss in three days and put a serious dent in their hope of playing in the finals.
The match was played in a vigorous fashion and the stewards had to step in and warn players on more than one occasion.
Best were Purse, McKenzie and Brereton.
