Despite rain fallin gthroughout the day the two sides played a high standard match. Melbourne goalled first through Coutie, but by quarter time the two sides were locked together on 3.3 apiece.
Melbourne had a slight advantage from the wind in the second quarter but failed to use it and added just three points for before half time. They struck back in the third, narrowing the gap to eight but Richmond had better stamina and ran away to a comfortable win in the last quarter.
Best were Tompkins, Allan and Coutie.
