Collingwood entered the game with a number of important players out, but Melbourne had even more injury trouble with six of their side absent and were eventually beaten easily.
The home side had all the luck in the first quarter. While they were marginally the better side their ability to kick goals from all sorts of positions also helped their position. After the Magpies narrowly extended their lead in the second quarter Melbourne surprised them with a burst in the third which put the game back in doubt before two quick Collingwood goals re-established order.
Best were Stanway, Strong and Mills. Coutie hurt his ankle and Howard suffered a severe cut above the eye.
