The undefeated Demons were fresh off winning the Grand Final replay, and came up against a North side who had made the finals in 1954, but had nstarted the 1953 season with three disappointing losses. On form in the new season Melbourne should have won comfortably, but they didn't have it all their own way.
For the second week in a row they were inaccurate in front of goal, and their bad kicking kept North in the game. Almost as many shots went out of bounds as registered a minor score. The Roos also won a surprising victory against the strong Demon ruck division, and despite leading at every change the visitors were never comfortably in front.
North threatened in the last quarter and cut the gap to six points but they couldn't get in front and Melbourne eventually crawled to a 13 point victory to remain the only undefeated side in the competition. Their attack had failed badly, with three different players tried at full-forward for the day and coming out with just two goals for Laurie Mithen.
Best were Melville, Marquis and Spencer. Lane replaced McLean (ankle) and Mithen suffered a cut hand.
