Melbourne lost four players in Park, Odgers, Daniels and Cowell before the game but had good players to replace them in Sykes, Cope and Mills. After a close game they came out on top, but could have won by more if they'd kicked straight.
Despite generally being the second best team St Kilda at least worked the ball into good scoring positions before taking shots, while Melbourne's forwards were often given shots on difficult angles. Eventually weight of numbers won out for the home side.
St Kilda had a chance of taking the lead early in the last quarter, but they hit the post and could never get their nose in front. Each side had shots towards the end, with Brereton and Coutie kicking the sealing goals before St Kilda got a consolation.
Strong, Brereton and Norman were Melbourne's best.
