Going into a match as favourite the first time in nearly a year the Demons managed to mess it up against fellow 1951 cellar dwellers Hawthorn.

The match was close all day but Hawthorn's forwards spurned many chances created by their dominant ruck division. The pacy Hawks came out after half-time and continued to play all over their opponents, but once more their forwards were wasteful.

Luckily for the visitors their defence held firm in the third, keeping Melbourne goalless, and the 2.6 return up front still gave them a lead at three-quarter time. Melbourne's main issue was their refusal to play straight up the ground, and an instance on going around the wings even when it wasn't working.

Melbourne hit the lead halfway through the last term through debutant Max Orr, but Hawthorn responded with three quick goals to condemn Melbourne to their second loss in the first three weeks of the new season.

Best were Collins, McMahen and McGivern. Unused 19th and 20th men were Love and Johnston.
