The sides met at the end of a year where each had struggled, with West Coast losing their last four and Melbourne their last six. The Demons kicked the first two goals but were generally disappointing, as they had been so often that season, but also had to contend with a 17-7 free kick count for the match.
Late second quarter goals from Neitz and Robertson got them back within seven points, but Ben Cousins goalled to give his side a 13 point lead at the long break. From then on it was all West Coast. Six goals to three in the third term ruined the game as a contest before Phil Matera kicked four of his own in the final term to help his side run away with the match.
Best were Russell Robertson, Guy Rigoni and Steven Armstrong. Jeff White was a late withdrawal with a leg injury, and he was replaced by Mark Jamar.
A bad night got worse when the team bus was involved in a road rage incident on the way back to the airport. A man was charged for causing 'significant damage' to the bus.
