Back at the MCG for the first time in 1970, the Demons had to contend with the deadly Peter Hudson who had booted 25 goals against them in two home and away matches in 1969. With Hudson's regular opponent Tassie Johnson retired, Paul Rowlands given the tough task and won plaudits for holding him to four goals.
Nearly six goals up at half time it was scarcely believable that these Demons were only two new players different from the wooden spoon outfit from the season before. They relaxed in the third quarter and let the Hawks back into the game but held on to win.
Best were Rowlands, Dillon and Hardeman. Osborne (knee) was replaced by Feldmann in the last quarter. Peter Sinclair was unused for the second week in a row.
