Assured of a top two spot the Demons were still playing to hold onto first place on the ladder, but had to wait an extra week to confirm their status as minor premiers due to a round postponed on account of the awful condition of league grounds after a long spell of wet weather.
Fitzroy proved troublesome for the first quarter, but just six behinds in the second half allowed Melbourne to ease away and start preparing for their finals campaign. Part of the reason the Maroons stayed close for so long was their better handling of the conditions, kicking long instead of trying to land precise passes.
The following day Great Britain declared war on Germany, officially beginning World War II.
