After a battling draw with premiership fancies Collingwood a week earlier, Melbourne continued their good form in the first quarter of their next match but quickly fell away. They kicked six goals for a second time at the same end in the third quarter, but unlike the first term when they kept their opponents goalless this time they also conceded six.
It didn't help that they took Allan La Fontaine and Jack Mueller into the game half fit instead of fielding replacements. but they matched their opponents in most aspects of the game other than a weak forward line that was inaccurate when it had chances. Their best accuracy came in the first half, where at one point the sides had overcome the tricky wind to kick a combined 14.1. The game turned when Melbourne had the wind in the third quarter but only ended the quarter with a four point lead.
The lead was traded early in the last quarter, before Baggott missed an easy snap to level scores. Melbourne pressured the St Kilda defence but couldn't force another goal, and the locals went down the other end for a sealing goal.
Best were Taylor, Deague, and Jones. Allan La Fontaine had to be moved from the centre position because of a strained leg muscle. Jack Foster suffered a cut eye.
Seconds
Melbourne 14.11.95 d. St Kilda 11.18.84
Notes
Football Record claims that at one point during the second quarter the two sides had a combined score of 14.1, but match records dispute this.
