The match remained close all day as neither side could take advantage of the wind when they had it. Melbourne were the far better side in the second half, but conceded goals late in the third quarter.
With the Pies taking a handy lead into the last quarter the visitors were happy to defend through the final term, and while they failed to score they kept the ball on the wings long enough to run down the clock and win the game.
