In serious danger of dropping out of the four, the Demons picked up an important win against one of the chasing pack, all but eliminating the Pies from finals contention. They did it despite only playing in bursts, with good periods at the end of the first and second quarters, and a match-winning burst in the third term.

Collingwood led by 17 points during the second term before Ron Barassi kicked two quick goals to lift his team. A move of John Lord to the forward pocket, after he'd failed at centre half-forward, also paid dividens as he kicked two goals.

The game was won in the third quarter, when Melbourne ran all over their opponents and extended the lead to 37 points at the last change. They relaxed in the last quarter and let Collingwood reduce the margin, but the Pies were never close enough to threaten.

Barassi, Mithen and Mann were best. Kenneally was originally named on the bench, but went into the starting side as a late replacement for Miller (bruised shin). Thorogood was promoted to the bench but was an unused reserve. Nilsson replaced Matthews (cramp) in the last quarter.
