The Students won the game with a three goal to nil first quarter. Melbourne was lucky not to concede more, with their defence under siege in the last few minutes of the term. Over the next two quarters the home side slowly began overhauling the deficit with better marking and pace, hitting the lead at three quarter time. They were within a goal late in the second term, before University kicked 1.1 to restore a two goal gap.
Two quick goals at the start of the third grabbed the lead. University got it back, but still found themselves four points down at the last change.
The umpire complained against Parke and Smith, claiming that Smith had told him "he didn't know the rules" whereas the Melbourne player counter-claimed that it was the umpire who had said similar to him. He complained that Parke ran across the mark even after he'd already been warned. Both charges were dismissed.
Best were Fitzpatrick, Purse and Mills.
