When VFL football stopped for three weeks as the interstate carnival was played in Melbourne, the Demons were top of the ladder but looked to be tiring. They returned from the break refreshed and got their season back on track with an easy win against the visiting Geelong.

Melbourne jumped to an early lead, and even though they weren't impressive they were four goals up at half time but it was the third quarter where they put their opponents to the sword with 18 scoring shots for 7.11. Geoff Tunbridge contributed three goals and hit the post with another shot.

If they'd kicked straight the margin would have been enormous, but it was enough to put the game well beyond Geelong's reach despite them playing an improved final term. Melbourne's rucks had dominated throughout the day and their defence was more often than not on top.

The Demons remained top of the ladder with a game's break on Collingwood but an inferior percentage. Nevertheless the win all but confirmed them as a top four side.

Best were Tunbridge, Marquis and Carroll. Johnson and Mithen were replaced by Gleeson and Rowarth respectively during the last quarter.
