Melbourne's up-and-down mid-season form continued, with a second loss in three weeks on either side of a near 100 point win against St Kilda.

The Demons started strongly, but blew a 10 point lead at three-quarter time and let the home side run over the top of them. Once again terrible kicking for goal had cost Melbourne dearly. They had dominated play but their inability to convert on a wet ground came back to haunt them.

Geelong, on the other hand, played like it was a dry day and won the game in two bursts - one during the second and one at the start of the last - which set up the win.

Best were Williams, McGivern and Beckwith.
