After a disappointing loss to top of the table Collingwood a week earlier the Demons bounced back in the first half of the split round with a comfortable win over the Blues.

In greasy conditions with a ball that was difficult to handle it was an evenly matched first half before the pacy Demons ran away from their opposition - a side who had disappointed throughout 1954. Melbourne weren't slowed by the conditions, and despite Carlton kicking the first goal of the last quarter to cut the margin to 13 points and having four of their six goals from free kicks directly in front of goal Melbourne held on to win easily.

Collins, Williams and Cordner were best. Dixon replaced the injured Adams at half time. Ferguson replaced McGivern in the last quarter. John Beckwith had a cut eye.
