Melbourne and Collingwood had crashed down the ladder in 1999, sitting 13th and last respectively and the greatly diminished crowd reflected the way the two sides were going.
In perfect conditions the two sides played a game befitting their positions on the ladder. Errors and turnovers were the order of the day. Melbourne hit the lead just before three quarter time and managed to hold on for an unconvincing victory.
Best were Woewodin, Walsh and Matthew Febey.
