Entering the game without Rippon, Parkin, McClelland, Sowden, Langley, Colcough or Ogilvie, Melbourne were further handicapped when Leith played with a back injury and Tredinnick suffered a leg injury in the first 10 minutes which left him useless for the rest of the day.
St Kilda were the superior side to half time, and skilful use of handball helped them to a six point lead. Despite Melbourne's handicaps they pulled away in the second half to win narrowly, and only poor kicking that stopped them from winning by more.
Best were Cumberland, McGinis and Moodie.
