From: Scotch College/University/St Kilda

Born in Exeter, England he emigrated to Australia in 1860 and made his debut for Melbourne after joining from St Kilda in July 1875. That year he also played for University.

Serjeant remained with the club through 1878, also captaining University in 1877 and 1878. Returned in 1880. Then moved to Britain where he served in their army for four years.

After his career ended he worked as a lawyer in Gippsland for 40 years.
