The 200cm ruckman had played in the ACT Under 17 representative team, and was drafted after being one of the standout players in Eastlake's 1988 Under 19 premiership side.
Hobbes was on Melbourne's list in 1989 and 1990 but returned to Canberra midway through his second year, citing the stress of playing in the city.
After studying construction and engineering he later worked in the construction industry in Queensland.
