Saturday 4 May - Friendly Societies' Gardens
Melbourne 0.3, 1.5, 3.7, 4.10
Footscray 0.1, 2.3, 2.5, 3.7
Melbourne win by 1 goal
Goalkickers: Smith 2, Benson 1, South 1
With more important matches taking place in the same neighbourhood a small crowd gathered to see the match. Melbourne won the toss and attacked first but were successfully held back by Footscray's defence. The visitors then had their own spell of pressure but neither side could manage a goal in the first quarter.
Melbourne opened the scoring through Benson early in the second quarter, but they then conceded two to find themselves behind at the long break.
After attacking from the start of the third term two goals from Smith late in the third quarter saw Melbourne back in front, and both sides added one more goal before the final bell.
Much amusement was had during the game from a 'big black dog' running on the field.
Best were Fox, G. Benson and McKenzie
