The locals had a weight advantage, but Melbourne used their marking and speed to win in a landslide. South Williamstown attacked first, but only kicked points and within five minutes the Reds were in front.
South kicked two goals in the second quarter, but Melbourne added three and further extended the margin. The visitors played better as a team in the third quarter, putting on another three goals to one before overwhelming their hosts in the final term.
