The game was played over two weekends with 25 players on each side. The first game was a day after the Queen's Birthday game against Geelong. Neither team could score and the match was declared a draw. The game was delayed for 15 minutes when the ball was lodged in a gum tree. Stones and other missiles were hurled at the ball but nobody could dislodge it and another ball had to be sourced.

On the second Saturday Melbourne's had a two man advantage due to one of the Carlton players fainting at the start of the game and having to withdraw and another suffering from an epileptic fit. Carlton had a replacement player ready to go but Melbourne refused them permission to make the change.

With their one man advantage Melbourne had a slight advantage in play, but towards the end of the game Carlton took the ball right up to their goal with a chance to score. They were turned back thanks to fine play by T. Ireland, and the captain Freeman who saved what seemed like a certain Carlton goal.

The match ended without score, reportedly the longest major game ever to be played without a goal. Best in the first game were Ireland and Harrison, and in the second game Tom Ireland, William Freeman and Horan.
