Richmond 2.3, 2.3, 2.4, 4.7
Melbourne win by five goals
Goalkickers: Smith 3, R. Kelly 2, Christy 2, Roche 1, Gerald Sheahan 1
Needing a win to at least keep pace with Essendon at the top of the table, the Reds conceded the first goal, but they soon found their feet. Smith equalised with his second shot of the game, but Richmond took the lead for a second time. Gerald Sheahan leveled the scores for a second time just before quarter time.
After changing ends and taking advantage of a slight breeze, Melbourne belatedly burst out of the blocks. First Christy, then Smith again. Melbourne ended up with six goals on the board by half-time and the game was won.
Richmond had the best of the last few minutes but they were too far back to make any difference other than stopping themselves from being thrashed.
David Christy was best on ground, while Moore and ex-Tiger O'Halloran were the top defenders. O'Dea used his long drop-kicks to dominate in the middle of the ground, and Melbourne's half-forward line would have been a disappointment were it not for R. Kelly.
