A week after earning their second win of the season against Footscray, normal service resumed as Melbourne were back to being thrashed.

Torrential rain and fierce wind hurt the match as a spectacle, but it didn't matter to the handful of Port Melbourne fans who had turned up. Port kicked the first three goals before Troubridge kicked Melbourne's first, but the visitors regained their three goal advantage by quarter time.

Melbourne only managed one goal a quarter while their opponents ran away from them.
