Melbourne had shown good form in defeat against Geelong a week earlier, and the newspapers declared there was little to split them from Fitzroy. Predictions proved correct as the match was draw.
The ground was in poor condition owing to recent rain and further showers which fell through the day, and the two sides struggled to score in the first quarter. For a time the play was confined to the centre of of the ground, before Fitzroy gradually worked the ball towards Melbourne's goal and registered the first major of the day.
The visitors had a slight wind advantage in the second quarter but conceded first goal. Eventually Burns got their first from a scrimmage in front of goal. Wiseman added another in the third quarter before Brown equalised late in the game. Melbourne had several chances to win in the dying minutes but could only register behinds.
Best were Griffith, King and Tuckfield.
Notes
Fitzroy City Press says Melbourne got 2.3 in the second half, which would have had their final score as 3.5
