Saturday June 14 - Royal Park
Carlton 1
Melbourne 1 (half time 1-1)
Match drawn
Goalkicker: Robert Carr 1
For three days before the match there was a doubt that it would be played due to unending rain. The sun finally came out on the morning of the game, and though there were muddy patches around the arena the ground was in far better condition than expected.
Once play commenced 30 minutes behind schedule, Melbourne was the first to attack. Two missed opportunities in the first 10 minutes were punished when Carlton went down the other end and took advantage of poor defensive play to open the scoring after 20 minutes.
The intensity of the game rose for the last 30 minutes of the first half, and after a number of misses Melbourne cleared the ball from the centre for Carr to mark 35 yards out. He kicked truly in the shadow of half time to level the scores.
On the changing of ends, both sides had good opportunities to take the lead but kicked nervously. With less than 10 minutes left the game was called off early after the crowd encroached on the field.
Best were Byrne, Forrester and Darchy.
