July 1885 match vs Williamstown

Saturday July 4 - MCG
Crowd: 700

Melbourne 1.8
Williamstown 2.1 (HT 1.6 to 1.0)

Williamstown win by 1 goal

Goalkicker: Plant 1

In front of a what the newspapers described as "a very small crowd", Melbourne's horror season went from bad to worse as they suffered their first ever loss to Williamstown.

The home side had their chances, but were wasteful. Williamstown had a limited score, but did a lot of attacking and they got the first goal of the game. It was quickly cancelled out by Plant, but once they defused a 10 minute long attack on their goal Melbourne then proceeded to spend the rest of the half attacking for no reward. They managed to kick several behinds but couldn't score.

In the second half Williamstown went on the attack almost immediately, keeping the ball in front of Melbourne's goal for the first 10 minutes. The home side fought back, but couldn't convert a goal before Williamstown broke through for the second time. Two more behinds followed before full time was called and Melbourne had suffered defeat against one of the youngest clubs in the VFA.

Best were Griffith, Carroll and A. Coulson.
