Melbourne didn't have their best side against the other powerhouse of the senior competition but managed to restrict them to a scoreless draw. They used their local knowledge and long kicking to neutralise Carlton's advantages.

Late in the game Melbourne had Carlton penned in front of their own goal but couldn't convert.

Crowds kept encroaching on the field during the match, and eventually one supporter decided to take matters into his own hands, mounted his horse and kept the crowd at bay.
