Graduating from the Fourths in 1976 to make his senior debut three seasons later, Durnan played in his only three wins in his debut season and then appeared in 15 straight defeats after that.

Moved to WAFL side Claremont in 1982, playing three games. Durnan returned to the Demons in 1984 but did not play a senior match before moving to Prahran in the VFA where he remained until 1987. In his second stint at the club he wore number 34.

Durnan later served as Recruiting Manager from 1988 to 1990.
