Graduating from the Fourths in 1976 to make his senior debut three seasons later, Durnan's only three wins came in his debut season. After that he played in 15 straight defeats.

Moved to WAFL side Claremont in 1982, playing three games. Durnan returned to the Demons in 1984 but did not play a senior match before moving to North Old Boys in the VAFA as captain/coach for 1985, then Prahran in the VFA in 1986. where he remained until 1987.

Durnan later served as Recruiting Manager from 1988 to early 1991, before joining Richmond in the same role.
