The 1987 Prahran VFA Second Division premiership ruck/rover wore Number 50 in 1988 reserves games, and played in the 1988 Panasonic Cup Quarter Final loss to Fitzroy. He returned to Prahran during the season and played with them until 1992 for 105 games in total.
He played for Old Xaverians from 1993 to 1996. After his playing career ended Tapping coached Old Brighton from 1997 to 2001 - including a B section premiership in his first year - and Old Scotch from 2002 to 2005. In 2007 he became an assistant coach at the Western Jets and in 2009 senior coach of Under 18 side Sandringham.
He was the Collingwood midfield development coach in 2012, then coach of their VFL team from 2013 through 2015, then a midfield coach at Brisbane Lions. In 2025 he became coach of the Essendon VFL team.
