The game was effectively an intra-club scratch match, as six of the University side were also Melbourne members. To compound their problems they missed two injured players, and fielded a weakened team. They were still favourites against a composite side made up of players from other clubs, but the Students surprised them with their teammwork.

The Varsity rushed the ball forward early, and within 10 minutes they were in front. Their second goal came before half time and Melbourne were left with it all to do. Carr and Loughnan had chances late in the game, the latter especially missing an easy shot.

Late in the game several spectators who infringed on the playing area were bowled over by players competing for the ball.
