August 1869 match vs University

Saturday 14 August - Melbourne Ground

Melbourne 2
University 1

Melbourne win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: William Riggall 1, Edwin Towle 1

The game was scheduled as a replacement for a proposed rematch of the July match against the Police. University side played with a number of members of Melbourne, South Yarra and Carlton.

Kicking with a strong wind Melbourne got the first goal after three minutes, but after that the opposition recovered and the rest of the game was a more even struggle. The sides changed ends after the goal and from the game was more even. The students eventually equalised, but once they were kicking into the breeze again they were back on the defensive.

Melbourne scored again, but the game was being played under the most goals rule rather than the traditional two goals for victory so there was still time for University to salvage something. They had the best of the game from then on but couldn't find the equalising goal.

Best were Byrne, Barker and Bell.
